The Renewable Shake-Up

Utilizing renewable energy has risen dramatically over the last decade. With more and more businesses implementing missions and plans to become green, carbon-neutral, or carbon negative, renewable energy is not slowing down.

Just last year, the environmental group, Ember, revealed that renewable energy surpassed fossil fuels as the dominant electricity source in the United Kingdom.

The statistics show that 42% of the electricity was generated by renewable sources compared to 41% for fossil fuels.

What Renewable Energy Sources Can I Have In The Workplace?

Sustainability has become a key value to consumers, meaning that businesses have had to shake up their methods and adapt to meet these new requirements.

Switching to renewable energy has big implications for the business becoming more sustainable from an energy point of view.

Renewability is an important facet of modern-day business, and not making an effort towards sustainability can be detrimental to the public opinion of the business.

We are all familiar with wind turbines, solar panels, and marine power as some of the most common forms of renewable energy, but what additional forms are effective?

Heat Pumps

High-quality heat pumps work by absorbing air from the outside or the ground to heat your business, but they can also be used at home.

Although many need electricity to run, they use less electricity as they are outputting renewable energy. They are best suited to well-insulated buildings to retain heat.

For businesses, heat pumps reduce the running costs for heat, which will eventually leave you with savings.

The benefits of heat pumps are that they are extremely efficient, they can heat both water and the building, they cut fuel costs, and reduce carbon emissions.

Solar Panels

As mentioned, you are probably familiar with solar energy. However, they are an incredibly effective form of renewable energy.

Solar panels can be installed into any kind of building or property, making it another good option for homes and businesses. They essentially absorb heat from the sun to heat water or generate electricity.

For business, solar panels will eventually save you money through lower energy costs and make you less dependent on rising energy prices.

The benefits of solar panels are that they reduce bills and cut your carbon footprint. Although they can be pricey, they do eventually pay for themselves.

Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectricity is another good option, particularly for homes. It works using hydropower systems converting the potential energy of downhill flowing water into kinetic energy which drives a generator to produce electricity.

The electricity generated is enough to power the appliances and lighting of an average home.

For businesses, these systems adopt the same features but are also good for being low maintenance to provide a decent return on investment.

The benefits of hydroelectricity include the fact it is a cheap option for energy and heating and reduces the carbon footprint.

Final thoughts

Overall, the importance of renewable energy is only going to increase with time, especially with the pressure on businesses to adapt.

Therefore, businesses must be able to plan and prepare a strategy for ways to cut their carbon footprint and become more environmentally sustainable businesses.
