The impact of technology on the casino world

The casino landscape has changed dramatically over the past few decades, and not just in Las Vegas. With the technological boom, casinos across the globe have been injected with automated programming, random number generators (RNGs) and bots of different forms. The changes can be seen from all different aspects of the gaming industry, including live blackjack which now involves real-time automated processes to make playing at home feel like the real thing. Small changes such as slot mechanisms developing to protect from theft to mechanical arms mixing up your cocktail at the bar– the developments are astounding to witness. Let’s take a look at the tech advanced areas of the industry.

How is Technology Transforming Casino?

One of the biggest transformations in the industry comes from online casinos. Although the internet and online gambling have been around for a long time, online casinos have taken off in the last few years for several reasons. The ease of accessibility in playing online casino games from your home or anywhere with connection benefits players massively – this was clearly the main selling point for casinos online. Today you’ll find players betting on live casino games such as live roulette but actually, it is the variety of options available that make online casinos so popular.

One of the most impactful developments is how the money is handled. Initially, casinos would trade your chips for cold hard cash at the table or slots that you played on. Instead, you now receive a slip which prints out from the machine, also known as Ticket-In-Ticket-Out (TITO) machines. These slips ensure that all money transfers can be done electronically protecting both the players and casinos from potential thieves. The systems have now gone on to further develop the payout methods further by using Smart Cards. Similar to the way a pre-paid credit card would work, the idea is that you use the card around the casino and your money is loaded onto and deducted from it, via a personal account.

The use of RNGs transformed the casino world. RNGs vary between the slots, roulette and blackjack but all offer the same premise of random number generation. When casinos started using RNG’s in the different games, they found that players started to trust what they saw more, that the games weren’t rigged to benefit the casino. Regulating the RNGs became law in many countries including the USA. Some laws require the RNGs to payback at a rate of 75%, some much higher, it all depends where you are gambling. Thanks to RNGs, the odds were no longer stacked against the player but were more even for both casino and gambler.

New Developments in Casino Tech

Fast forward to the more recent technological advances and we find Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR). VR is becoming increasingly popular and many homes now have a virtual reality headset. Slots Million is a casino which can be used as a virtual reality casino. AI is more often than not used with online casinos to improve the user’s experience, and although there has been some evidence of it being used in brick-and-mortar casinos, we haven’t quite reached the point where AI players are competing around a poker table.

Conclusion

As the world of technology develops, we will continually see the effect it has on the casino industry. There is a lot of different speculation as to what the next big breakthrough could be. Will we see a holographic casino game or enter the world through virtual reality? The future of casino is certainly exciting.
