iSim Technology: Are SIM Cards Deemed To Disappear?

With the age of technology-on-the-go firmly underway, it’s common to use your mobile device on a daily basis. We use it in place of a map, to look up information, to play casino games for real money, to connect with other people and many other uses. It has become an everyday tool, but we don’t always consider the basic necessity a mobile needs.

As we read this, our own SIM card may be on its way out. Both Apple and Samsung are currently in talks with cell carriers to help build an ‘e-SIM,’ which will allow customers to transfer networks without purchasing a new card. This means that swapping SIM cards to switch phones may become obsolete, as everything will be done through a device interface.

There hasn’t been much of a change when it comes to SIM cards. Physical SIM cards continue to be popular, but eSIM has yet to gain traction. Qualcomm, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, works with Vodafone and Thales to change that with a new technology dubbed iSIM.

What Is iSIM Technology?

iSIM is a novel technology that allows the SIM card’s functionality to be integrated into the main CPU of a device. As a result, instead of having a SIM card slot in any device, the SIM would be incorporated into the processor.

The technology is similar to an eSIM, except it is built into the machines. iSIM follows GSMA guidelines and integrates SIM functionality into the device’s primary processor. Qualcomm claims that this will improve performance, memory capacity, and system integration. With an iSIM, you may get more out of your devices.

SIM cards could travel beyond mobile phones thanks to iSIM technology. Laptops, IoT gadgets, smartwatches and even virtual reality platforms might all benefit from them in the near future. According to Qualcomm, there could be several benefits. For example, because it provides additional space within a gadget, the design and performance of the device could be improved.

In addition, there’s a more fantastic room for design creativity with no SIM card slot. Telecom companies can also take advantage of existing eSIM infrastructure. It also extends the possibilities of a SIM card to devices where imagining a SIM card was previously impossible.

What to Expect From ISIM Technology

The technology can open up a whole new universe of possibilities, particularly for IoT devices. For example, an iSIM might be used on connected devices worldwide to securely connect to an IoT network. Furthermore, it saves a lot of plastic by eliminating SIM cards. On the other hand, Telecom companies will have to accept the concept if it is to become mainstream. It could take several years for the technology to become widely available.

Although no iSIM device has been released yet, Qualcomm and Vodafone collaborated on a concept demonstration to demonstrate the technology’s commercial readiness and efficiency when used with existing infrastructure. On Vodafone’s network across Europe, a rally was held.

The device used was a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G running the Thales iSIM operating system powered by a Snapdragon 888 5G processor. Using Vodafone’s remote management platform in Samsung’s R&D labs, the proof of concept was carried out.

Key Takeaways

To conclude, iSim technology looks like it will firmly be the next big move in our digital world, largely due to its convenience. It is an eco-friendly solution and removes a vital part of mobile devices, replacing it with better and faster technology. iSim technology is moving towards the future, ensuring the everyday tool used across the globe becomes more streamlined.
