The importance of the internet for the legal profession

In the past, the significance of the internet for the legal profession was negligible. Advertising has even been prohibited for the legal profession in the Netherlands for a long time. Files were only held physically and websites were not common at law firms.

In the meantime, the internet has become an indispensable part of the legal profession, in the field of marketing, file building and knowledge gathering.

Importance of internet marketing for the legal profession

In the past, lawyer marketing in the legal profession consisted mainly of placing advertisements in newspapers, magazines and local publications. Word-of-mouth advertising and referrals also brought lawyers to new cases.

Many other industries have discovered the Internet as a marketing tool long ago. The legal profession is lagging behind in that respect. Nevertheless, there are now more and more law firms that advertise via the internet. This is the case, for example, with a law firm where a personal injury lawyer (Dutch: letselschade advocaat) places an advertisement via SEA. It is then indicated that victims of personal injury, for example in the event of a traffic accident or industrial accident, can go for legal assistance to recover personal injury compensation.

In addition to SEA, law firms are also spending increasingly higher marketing budgets on SEO. This mainly concerns offices that want to be easy to find in their own region, but also throughout the Netherlands. And that is the great advantage for lawyers in internet marketing. In this way, national advertising can be done by personal injury lawyers who help people recover damages after an industrial accident (Dutch: bedrijfsongeval).

In the past lawyers focused mainly with marketing on the city or region in which they were located, but now they can advertise nationally or reach personal injury victims with a good SEO strategy. The lawyers who do this have a big advantage over the competition who do not deal with internet marketing. For example, a personal injury lawyer in Utrecht (Dutch: letselschade advocaat Utrecht) who can now approach personal injury victims not only in Utrecht, but throughout the Netherlands!

Internet and file structure in the legal profession

In the past files of lawyers were only kept on paper. This resulted in big files that were often unclear. In the legal profession, however, more and more work is being done with digital systems, including in the cloud.

Nowadays most lawyers’ files are no longer just in the cabinet, but mainly on the computer. This is not only more organized, but also more environmentally friendly now that far fewer files have to be printed.

The conclusion is that the world of tech has also increasingly entered the legal profession. Especially the lawyers who deal with this benefit from this.
