How to Become an In-Demand Professional

Digital skills are IT right now. Almost 90% of new job openings in the UK require digital skills from employees, leaving more than 12 million people without the possibility to fill them. And the statistics for the future are not comforting as well. Within the next decade, the lack of digital skills will touch almost 12% of the population in Britain.

Since digital skills are so in demand right now, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of the companies are focusing more on the digital aspects of promotion. Now, a new category has been created, and that is digital marketing.

And how exactly does digital marketing differ from traditional marketing? Firstly, traditional marketing doesn’t have the option to update. For example, let’s pretend that you posted an ad in a magazine. Suddenly the product you’re advertising is updated to the point that a change in the content of the ad is needed. With traditional marketing, you cannot do that. The only thing left to do is to post another ad, but that will require using the marketing budget for the second time. Traditional marketing is also a lot more expensive than digital marketing.

Digital marketing is a very good career choice – firstly because it’s still developing, and secondly, because the average salary of a digital marketer is between $90.000 and $125.000 per year. And how to become a professional that businesses would fight for? Well, there are a few things you can do. Here are some of them.

A Little Education Never Killed Anybody

To be successful in a specific field, firstly, you need to understand it. That doesn’t mean that you have to spend four or more years at university to get a degree. Furthermore, there is no specific degree in digital marketing, so you would have to complete one in marketing or in the area related to it.

As an alternative, you can just take a digital marketing course. There is a variety of classes to choose from, both online and offline. Since digital marketing is an industry that is continuously developing, your learning should never stop. Practice the best teacher, but not the only one.

Experience, Experience, Experience!

The best way to gain experience would be an internship. It will expose you to the professional environment, and show you what working in digital marketing really is like. It can also help you in deciding which aspect of digital marketing would be the best for you, in which you feel the best. It will teach you to learn from your mistakes, and show you what kind of obstacles digital marketers encounter in everyday life and how they overcome them.

Unfortunately, internships can be hard to find and get. However, don’t worry – there are other ways apart from internships. For example, you can start your own blog or social media channels. Also, if some of your family members or friends own a small business, you can help them for free. If you put it into your CV, your future employer will see that you were passionate about it enough to do something in that direction on your own.

Networking Events? Sign me up!

Another thing you can do to become an in-demand professional is attending specialized conferences dedicated to digital marketing. Of course, there are several study aids that you can access online like articles and podcasts. However, attending these kinds of events gives you the chance to learn things that are not written or shown in those materials. Especially since they are usually full of interesting workshops and lectures.

It is also a good way to meet influential people in the industry and learn their opinion and point of view on several aspects. You can also learn about in which direction the industry is heading and what will be the best move to make to stay in-demand.

Conclusion

Digital marketing is a well-prospering industry, especially since it is quite new. It is much more practical and accessible than its traditional version. If you decide to pursue a career in it, you need to remember to never stop learning, so that you can always stay in-demand. Also, start doing things from your initiative – employers always look better at people who are trying to develop themselves without the need to tell them to do so.
