What’s Best in Terms of Productivity? Coffee Shops, Libraries, Beaches, or Coworking Spaces?
There are all kinds of ways and places that employees can try to get some work done. Some companies opt for the more traditional approach, with offices for each employee housed at a building to which everyone commutes each morning. But as the 21st century moves along, it has become more and more common for alternative possibilities to be considered. In this article, we will examine some places where employees might go and we’ll discuss how productive they are likely to be once they get there.
Working in coffee shops has become increasingly popular lately. If you go to one of the larger chain stores that come equipped with overstuffed couches, comfortable chairs, and places where you might plug in a laptop, then you might see dozens of people hard at work. They could very well be on the clock, but they are telecommuting. On the plus side, these workers are going to be very well caffeinated, so their energy level will be high. However, coffee shops are sometimes noisy. Let’s look at another possibility.
Libraries have long been regarded as places for students to study and for people to browse amongst the books they are considering borrowing. Might an employee want to go and get some work done there? Libraries are nice and quiet, so they have that going for them. Probably the main drawback is that it is easy to feel isolated or claustrophobic there. It’s true that multiple employees from the same company might go there together, but it hardly seems to be all that advantageous.
Why not travel to the beach and try to get some work done? It’s true that some companies are letting their employees take their responsibilities outdoors. If they can get their job done in such a setting, then what’s the harm? Probably the beach is not the best place for such an undertaking, though. If you brought a laptop or a tablet on which to work, there’s the danger of sand getting in it and damaging it. Then there’s the risk of sunburn, salt water, and more than likely there will be some screaming kids nearby distracting you. This probably isn’t the best choice.
Coworking spaces are being installed more frequently these days as well, and they might make the most sense out of these options. Coworking spaces often come in the form of apps for your phone or electronic device. You install the app, and then you use it to contact your coworkers and arrange to meet somewhere with WiFi and comfortable accommodations. The reason this is so ideal is that you can set up shop wherever is most convenient for the day. This provides some welcome flexibility.
No two companies are exactly alike, so it stands to reason that different ones will have dissimilar ideas of what qualities the best workplace should have. Many modern businesses like to think outside the box, though. Conducting their affairs in an office building is conventional, but some find it boring. If you work for a company that allows you to telecommute, hopefully, you will be able to explore some of these options and figure out which of them is best for you.
