Safety in the Lakes [Infographic]

Attracting approximately 16 million visitors each year The Lake District is a magnet for hikers, walkers and those who love the great outdoors. An area with outstanding natural beauty there is always plenty to explore and experience and yet each year many visitors end up having to be rescued by Cumbrian Mountain Rescue teams. The rescue teams are classified as an emergency service and deal with hundreds of incidents every year and yet they are fully manned by volunteers, with no government funding they rely on charitable donations in order to continue providing their vital services.

This infographic provides information on the equipment and gear you need for safer hiking and walking. It also informs you how to contact the rescue teams should you be unfortunate to need their services along with the information you need to give them so that they can find you as quickly as possible.

In one month in 2016 the Wasdale rescue team attended 6 emergencies in just 12 hours. They were ‘shocked’ at the lack of basic outdoor skills these walkers knew. The infographic looks at some other rather startling facts about the rescues in The Lake District, so read on and take note when visiting the area or you could end up another statistic on one of the 12 Rescue Team’s list.
