Why Disney Plus Didn’t go for The Global Market in the Initial Days?

Disney Plus is a streaming portal which had launched in America in November 2019. Disney first made its move into the streaming market in 2016 by acquiring streaming technology developer BAMTECH. This benefited Disney’s growing D2C businesses, including ESPN+, Hulu, and Hotstar.

On Nov 13, 2019, a day after its release, Disney announced that the streaming platform had already signed up more than 10 million supporters. Thanks to its reasonable price and the expanded Disney library, Disney plus has been well-received. Frank Pallotta of CNN explained that “the industry [Disney] has repackaged its growth of beloved content for the service, making it an admirable companion to the other services in the forum. Nick Pino of TechRadar explained, “If Disney keeps it updating with new content, Disney+ could approach Netflix sooner fairly than later.”

Upon launch, Disney+ experienced significant technical complications. Users criticized about receiving error notifications that the service was down and that they were “unable to connect,” which was annoying because many had paid for the benefits months in advance. On some occasions, passwords needed to be reconstructed to permit access.

One other negative attitude with the service’s launch was presenting the non-HD episodes of The Simpsons. Namely, instead of showing them in their original condition ratio, they were either cropped to fit 16:9 widescreen televisions or carelessly stretched out to that form ratio. FXX’s now-defunct “Simpsons World” streaming platforms were similarly criticized when launched. In response, Disney explained they would qualify to watch the chapters of the first 19 seasons and some from season 20 in early 2020. The feature was made accessible on May 28/ 2020.

On Jun 26, 2020, the 2017 DuckTales series had its episodes organized in proper order while the co-creator of Phineas and Ferb, Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, has explained that they are working on improving the ranking of his series.

Disney+ was the top trending Google search word in 2019 in the US. In February 2020, Disney announced that Disney+ had 26.5 million subscribers by the end of 2019 and 28.6 million by Feb 3, 2020. By April 2020, Disney+ had over 50 million paid supporters, with approximately 8 million of those being from India. Overall Disney claimed that it has reached 100 million paid supporters but no details on when the milestone was reached was made public. Furthermore, they also quoted that subscriber numbers will be reported only when it reaches certain targets or milestones, rather than doing it quarterly.

In 2020, Apple Inc. had named Disney+ the Apple TV App of the Year. It was the second and third most downloaded free app of the year globally on both iPad and iPhone, respectively. It was also voted for the best app of 2020 by Google Play users.
