Data Encryption Methods to Secure Your Cloud

The cloud may be one of the technological wonders of the world, as you can rely on it to store, save, and access certain files wherever you are. On top of that, it also ensures that, unlike with removable media devices, you won’t lose your data/ files.

However, given that the cloud is always on the Internet, this also means that people may want to try and access it in order to steal your data. Even though many cloud solutions come with decent security options, they often lack the most important ones, such as cloud encryption – that ensures full data protection -, for example.

As such, in today’s article, we’ll talk about some of the data encryption methods that you can use to secure your cloud!

Data Encryption Pre-Upload

In case the cloud service of your choice doesn’t come with automatic encryption of data pre-upload, then you should manually encrypt your files before you upload them.

There are plenty of third-party encryption tools online that will apply encryption and passwords to your files. If you do this, you’ll protect your data better than the cloud solution itself can – in case it doesn’t feature comprehensive security options.

Cloud Cryptography

Some cloud service providers feature a layer of information security that protects files and enabled secure access to them – usually to those in need of shared cloud services.

Basically, cloud cryptography is based on the Quantum Direct Key system – an advanced system of symmetric encryption keys. With it, users of the same cloud will receive a private and a public key pair connected to an ID.

On top of that, cloud cryptography also improves network congestion.

Cloud Access Security Broker

You could also encrypt data and be in control of your own keys with the help of a CASB – cloud access security broker.

This type of broker offers you only one point of visibility and access control within any cloud app of a large enterprise. The control you gain comes via contextual access control, leakage protection of data, and encryption for data at rest.

In short, the broker mediates the connections made between the general public and cloud apps via several proxies and API connectors that protect your data.

Encryption via Cloud Service Provider

Encrypting data before you upload it, as mentioned above, makes it quite protected. But, as some would say, you have to expect the unexpected.

Therefore, to enhance data protection, you can rely on your cloud service provider to encrypt your data. Many providers offer their clients data encryption when using their cloud storage.

As such, you’ll have data protected on a local level – pre-upload encryption -, on a general level – after upload encryption-, and during transit as well.

The Bottom Line

As you can see, there are a lot of ways through which you can encrypt your data and make it fully secure while stored in the cloud.

You can encrypt it before you upload it, have your cloud provider encrypt it while it is being uploaded on the cloud, and then have them encrypt it once again when it is in storage.

In short, you can fully protect your data in all circumstances, thus making your cloud extremely secure!
