Everything You Need to Know About Reliance JioFiber

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani announced JioFiber earlier this year in July. This was the company’s attempt to step into India’s attractive yet untapped broadband market. The company launched its service on September 5, but, as of now, there’s no information on when the installations will start. If you’re on the wall on whether you need a Jio Fiber in your home or not, here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is Reliance JioFiber?

At the Reliance Industries’ 41st annual general meeting in July, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio announces its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband service. It was pitched as an all-in-one solution that wants to offer several different services including broadband, IPTV landline, internet of things (IoT), virtual reality and more.

It used an optical fibre network to deliver high-speed broadband connectivity. The broadband service claims to be able to offer speeds up to 1Gbps.

JioFiber Features

Local Cable Operators

Reliance Jio has already acquired controlling stakes in Hathway, GTPL, and DEN. The telco will use them to broadcast channels from local cable operators (LCOs). They’ll be broadcasting HD content to JioFiber customers.

Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality

Jio’s set-top box is equipped to support both virtual reality and mixed reality content. You’ll be able to see MR content in various categories like education, shopping, and even movies. With JioFiber comes the Holoboard MR headset. Developed by Tesseract, you can use it to do things like experience the clothes you wish to purchase right from your home.

Gaming

Jio’s all-round set-top box is designed to support console gaming. It comes with a built-in graphics card and will be compatible with all gaming controllers. Jio also boasts zero-latency gaming with this set-top box. At first, you’ll be able to play games like FIFA 2019, but more games will come in the future out of Jio’s partnership with Tencent Games and Microsoft. Rest assured any online casino in India is not a moment and a click away from you with JioFiber.

Voice and Video Calls

If you get JioFiber, you’ll be able to make free voice calls from the landline to any operator (mobile or fixed) in India. You’ll even be able to group call up to four other members using the set-top box. With an additional ₹500 per month worth of international calling packs, Jio supports unlimited calls to the US and Canada.

Premium OTT Content

From mid-2020, JioFiber’s “First Day First Show” feature will allow customers to watch movies the same day as the theatre release. You’ll get access to premium content from leading OTT platforms as well.

How can you get Reliance JioFiber?

If you’re interested in getting Reliance JioFiber, you should head over to the online registrations that have been active since August 15. You can register on the company’s website or directly on the Jio app.

These registrations are free of cost, but you should know that registering doesn’t guarantee installation later. In fact, they’re seen as an “expression of interest”, which means that Jio is using the registrations to gauge the existing situation. The company has also made it clear that the city and area/society with more number of requests will get priority.

As of now, Reliance Jio has received 1.5 crore requests and is aiming to cover as many as 2 crore residences and 1.5 crore business establishments across 1,600 towns in India.
