The Pocophone F1

After the Mi and Redmi series, Xiaomi has introduced another phone series named Pocophone. This series of phones budget flagships. For now, they actually mean it.

The first phone in the Pocophone series is the F1. Phones are getting more and more affordable over time but Xiaomi has taken it one step ahead by making a powerful device at a more aggressive price point.

I say the F1 as Xiaomi decided to launch this phone with a price less than ₹30,000. The base variant of this phone is ₹20k and progresses all the way to 30k. Now you might wonder why you should get this phone, considering there are a lot of other phones at this price range already.

First I should talk about the specifications.

  • Display: 6.18-inch full-HD+ 18:7.9 aspect-ratio full-view display protected by Gorilla Glass 3.
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 845.
  • Ram/Storage: 6/64GB, 6/128GB, 8/256GB.
  • Camera: 20MP front facing with an infrared sensor, 12+5MP rear camera.
  • Battery: 4000mah
  • Others: USB type-C, fast charging, liquid cooling technology.

Most of the budget phones come with a mid-range chipset and significantly lower specs in this price range, especially Samsung.

The display on this phone is 6.18-inch with full-view technology, unlike other phones. It’s protected by Gorilla Glass 3, so you do not require tempered glass to protect the display. There is a notch at the top of the display and if you do not like it then you can hide it using the software.

The most highlighted part on this phone is the chipset. It is powered by the all-new Snapdragon 845 and we know that we cannot find any phone in this price range with this chipset at least for now.

Respectively, you will not find any less RAM and storage. The phone also supports micro-SD in the second hybrid-SIM slot.

The camera will also perform well. On the front side you have a 20MP camera and an infrared sensor for better face unlocking even in low light. On the rear, there is the 12+5MP dual camera for taking your snaps.

All the things are powered by a 4000 mAh battery and you can quickly charge it through the USB type-C port using the fast charging support.

Xiaomi ships the Poco F1 with MIUI 9 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. Xiaomi has mentioned that the device will be updated to MIUI 10 soon after it becomes available and an update to Android P in Q4 2018.

The Poco F1 faces competition from the likes of the OnePlus 6, the Asus Zenfone 5Z and the recently launched LG G7+ ThinQ. What makes the F1 interesting is its low price. Xiaomi has priced this new phone starting at ₹20,999 for the base 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant, ₹23,999 for the 6GB RAM/128GB variant and ₹28,999 for the 8GB RAM/256GB variant. The Kevlar armoured edition is only available in a 8GB RAM/256GB storage variant and is priced at ₹29,999. With such aggressive pricing, the Poco F1 is the most affordable Snapdragon 845-powered device out there.
