OnePlus 5T: its bigger, better and still comes with a headphone jack

OnePlus, a Chinese manufacturer, was a startup founded on 16 December 2013 by Pete Lau or Carl Pei. They started their company by making affordable high-end smartphones or flagship killer. More can be read at their Wikipedia page.

Today, Oneplus is a mainstream smartphone brand respected around the globe. Oneplus has always been interesting since the beginning but last night was so exciting and the reason was Oneplus 5T launch. The launch event was held in Newyork city, USA, it was fun to watch some of the popular Youtubers get their hands-on experience post-event.

Oneplus 5T has been launched at the same time as its older predecessor Oneplus 3T, an unforgettable piece of hardware. Talk about the predecessor Oneplus 5 was launched in June 2017 with killer specifications including Snapdragon 835 bundled with 6 or 8 gigs of ram on board, dual camera and much more.

Let’s talk about 5T. This phone has changed very little when it comes to internals but if you take a look a lot has been changed.

Let us take a look at the specification:

  1. 6 inch 18.9 aspect ratio bezel-less edge to edge full HD (2160×1080) optic AMOLED display.
  2. Snapdragon 835 chip-set which is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.45ghz.
  3. 6GB RAM/64GB onboard storage and 8GB RAM/128GB onboard storage variant like Oneplus 5.
  4. 16MP Sony IMX398 sensor with f/1.7 aperture paired with a 20MP Sony IMX376K sensor with the same aperture and dual LED flash.
  5. 16MP Sony IMX371 sensor with f/2.0 aperture.
  6. 3300mah Non-removable battery.

5T is the first bezel-less phone from Oneplus. It comes with a 6.01 inch (~80.0% screen to body ratio) with resolution  1080×2160 pixels 18.9 aspects ratio optic AMOLED display which is protected by Corning Gorilla glass 5.

While the hardware under the hood is about same as OnePlus 5, it rocks a Snapdragon 835 chip-set clocked at 2.45ghz with Adreno 540 GPU, comes in 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 8GB RAM/128GB storage variants.

The camera is also the same but if you take a look in depth then you will find that the last year’s 20mp telephoto lens has been changed by few tricks. This year they focus on low light photography so both rear cameras have same f/1.7 aperture and come with intelligent pixel technology which was introduced last year on OnePlus 3T’s front-facing camera.

Front-facing camera is the same 16MP with f/2.0 aperture.

The battery is non-removable 3300mAh. 5T comes with USB type-C (2.0), 3.5mm headphone jack, Dash charging but fingerprint scanner has been moved to back of the phone with support for some gestures now.

Looks identical, right? No, you can now unlock your OnePlus phone with your face.

Yes, you are right. Face recognition unlocking feature is finally here but it comes with a caveat. It is an ordinary security application that scans a photo of your face with help of the powerful front-facing camera on your 5T, albeit, there is no special hardware on the device like on the iPhone 10 or X.

Sales are starting via Amazon.in from 21st November at 4.30 PM IST exclusively for Amazon Prime members only and others have to wait for an open sale starting 28th November or  you can always get one by visiting the OnePlus store, although initially stock is going to be very limited.

Oneplus 5T is priced at ₹32,999 for 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant and ₹37,999 for 8GB RAM/128GB variant.
