Five reasons why we should think twice before adopting cloud computing in business

It is no exaggeration to consider that Cloud Computing has indeed been a revelation of sorts, in technology in recent years, thanks to its hyper hyped marketing strategies and the much debated beliefs that data storage, retrieval and transmission in the internet is more beneficial, when compared to storage in individually based in-house servers. These are some of the reasons why enforcing Cloud Computing needs some rethinking, especially when viewed in line with potential and probable challenges and threats.

1. Overdependence on the Internet: When the going is smooth, it is indeed judicious to have full faith in the performance of internet connectivity, but what if there is outage or shutdown of the Internet? Corporates and institutions that have pinned their hopes on Cloud Computing would indeed be in a veritable fix if the internet shut down with all database in the Cloud. This is one aspect that all potential and future CC users need to ponder over.

2. Cloud Computing is most beneficial only for Western Markets: Developing and underdeveloped economies cannot gain the optimum usage of CC due to power infrastructural problems. Considering the growing economy of India, for instance which have just emerged from the lantern power sources quite recently, the dependence on cable or landline infrastructure, for uninterrupted power supply, is indeed limited. Power supply being as acute a problem, there is real trepidation on the success of CC in countries where power shortages are acute and most people depend on captive power sources rather than mainframe electric energy. State infrastructure power dependency, which is a pre requisite for CC utilization, may not really work out in the case of many businesses in underdeveloped or developing nations of the world

3.  Bandwidth determination and gain are important pre requisites: Hosting and sustaining CC requires handsome bandwidth, and are important considerations for businesses that are dependent on CC for all their needs. With increasing demands for caps on bandwidth determination and usage, the onus of importance could shift to ISP and their roles. It could well boil down to who could negotiate more successfully for more bandwidth in the corridors of ISP domains. Lower bandwidth may even become CC unsustainable in long run.

4. CC means that data could be subjected to US laws, irrespective of country of operation: US law enforcement could have access to data stored in CC without prior warrants. Essentially it is treated as draft emails and given only such importance. Data stored in Googe Drives, ‘secure’ Dropboxes or SkyDrive could be pulled up at will, more so after the enforcement of draconian Patriot Act, which could heavily compromise personal data  stored on CC domains

5. Finally, Role of ISP is crucial and needs to be monitored closely: While everything seems to be encrypted in VPNs, how well ISPs are capable and confident of handling crucial data protection and preservation are indeed circumspect and need to consider several crucial factors like data privacy, confidentiality and transmission issues
While CC has been praised to solve more problems than it creates, only empirical situations and its outcomes could indeed  the relevance or otherwise of CC and its impact on businesses who trust and believe in them, heart, soul and VPN.
