Ways to Add Security to Your Dedicated Server

Unfortunately, we live in a world where no website is ever 100% safe from an attack. Sites both large and small are attacked by hackers using DDoS, phishing, and other malware in staggering numbers. Still, for those whose sites rely on a dedicated server, there are some steps that can be taken to improve security and reduce your chances of falling victim to an attack.

Install the Bare Minimum

The more software you have running through your dedicated server, the more vulnerable your site becomes to potential attacks. For this reason, it’s typically best to streamline your software as much as possible and only download/use what your site absolutely needs to run. If you try out a program that you don’t end up using, delete it. By only running the bare minimum, system administrators also have an easier time monitoring your site, keeping things running efficiently, and improving overall security.

Back Up Data Regularly

No matter how secure you think your site is, taking the time to back up data often is an absolute must. This is one of the easiest things you can do to provide yourself with added peace of mind and confidence in your site’s security. By backing up your data, you’ll always have copies of all your important files; this way, in the event that your site is attacked and you lose information, you’ll be able to rebuild and still have access to your files.

Establish Emergency Procedures

No matter how many steps you take to beef up security, there’s always a slight chance that something could slip through the cracks. For this reason, all sites should have procedures and protocols in place so that everybody involved knows what steps to take to mitigate damage and protect data. This may mean creating a chain of command, knowing how to prepare statements to users (if needed), and knowing how to reach their hosting company’s point of contact.

Update Server Software

Last but not least, website administrators must take the time to install updates on important software as they become available. Outdated software is much more prone to hackers and intruders, after all. Manual checks for updates can be run as often as you’d like and should be part of your everyday site maintenance tasks. Upon installing an update, always check to make sure that it completes installation and that everything is running smoothly after the fact.

You can never be too careful when it comes to your website’s security. If you’re looking for ways to improve security for your dedicated server and thus your website, be sure to keep these tips in mind. These are all easy tips to implement, but they could make all the difference for your site.
