Samson Z55 Closed Back Over-Ear Professional Reference Headphones

Despite the fact that Samson is considered as a newbie in the world of professional headphones, there is no question that the recently introduced Samson Z55 Closed Back Over-Ear Professional Reference Headphones have boosted up the profile of the manufacturer. It has the capacity to satisfy both studio engineers and music lovers.

Overall, it provides an amazing balance of full-bodied, rich lows, combined with high-frequency definition. Even though it may lack the commonly plush comfort that other models have, I can still say that it is one of the best out there when it comes to quality and overall performance.

How is Samson Z55 Designed?

My first impression when I opened the box and saw the headphones was that it may be lacking in modernity that is already common in other modern headphones. It comes with a minimalistic design of black and metal, with a secure fit. As such, it is more of a professional gear rather than a stylish and fashionable headphone. The logo of the brand is visibly emblazoned on its outer ear cups using huge gray letters.

The over-ear circumaural earpads are lined using lambskin, while the headband underside is cushioned firmly. I think they are not really the softest or most luxurious feeling out there, but as I started wearing it on, they are still comfortable though. All you have to do is to use the clicking stop-points located on its headband in order to adjust the feat on each of the ears.

In a way to make up for its not-so-stylish design, this headphone comes with three detachable cables, with each of them pluggable to the left earcup, staying connected securely with its twist-and-lock mechanism. Aside from the three cables, it also comes with a ¼ inch headphone jack adapter, as well as a leather drawstring for a carrying pouch.

One of the three cables come with a one-button mic, as well as a remove which allows you to play/pause music, answer/end calls, as well as skip tracks. However, this is about it if you are using Android. On the other hand, if you are using iOS, there are more available options for you. For instance, you can go back to previously played tricks by simply triple clicking the button. At the same time, you can also do fast forward and rewind by pressing down the button after doing two or three fast taps.

How does it Sound?

What I like about the sound is its amazing sub-bass content. I tried to play ‘Silent Shout’ by The Knife, and a deep bass is obviously delivered. At top volume levels, there is no distortion. At comfortable volume levels, on the other hand, you can still hear that solid thump of bass, also balanced by its amazing highs.

Music with deeper bass will allow the sound signature of the Samson Z55 to surface accordingly. The drums may sound thunderous and unnatural as it emphasizes too much the deeps lows. In higher ranges, however, this headphone can really step up the treble edge of sound, producing rich and crisp tones simultaneously.

Focusing on the Lows, I personally think it would not be best to expect too much with this headphones when it comes to creating a powerful low end. However, it is still safe, representing bass without overpowering too much. As such, if you are searching for a good pair of headphones that can give you that deep bass, this may not be the best for you.

When it comes to mids, the Samson Z55 is quite good in a way that it gives good vocal clarity  to songs. While background instruments may get the tendency to be pushed slightly to the background, they are still good though. The highs, on the other hand, come with a bit of sheen to it, but fortunately, it’s not the piercing or painful kind.

What I don’t like about it

Generally speaking, I like the quality of the sound that the Samson Z55 Closed Back Over-Ear Professional Reference Headphones produces. What I am not really into, though, is that they press quite tightly to my ears, putting pressure under it, causing me an uncomfortable pain. Imagine that kind of pain you usually feel after blowing up too many balloons? That’s the very same feeling for me. But, that’s just a personal issue.

The other things are pretty tolerable, as I did not really expect too much out of it, which is also the reason why I was surprised at how the quality turned out to be actually amazing. One obvious issue, however, is the price. However, the fact that it is a ‘reference’ headphone means that it is equipment that is needed for professional tasks such as mixing a studio album. As such, the price justifies its purpose. It’s pretty obvious, though, that the manufacturer did not mess up with the quality.

Final Thoughts

All in all, there are more things that I really like about this headphone model than the drawbacks that I have observed. For one, it comes with a solid build, as well as an amazing sound quality. While I personally think that the features do not really justify its price tag, the fact that it is designed for professional purposes made me accept it. Other things that I personally like about it is that it gives an amazing sense of space to the stereo material, producing clear detail, with lows that extend a long way what you might expect from standard monitors.

Personally, I would encourage using the Z55 with any closed phones that you have for mixing, or are planning to buy. Even though open phones are generally best for mixing, this particular headphones work better when it comes to dual-function tracking, as well as mixing, especially if you cannot run two pairs. Samson, as a brand, is known for producing budget units, which is why they might find it challenging to persuade users to choose their headphones rather than other comparably priced, and more known models in the market. However, it is quite obvious that the Samson Z55 is one that really deserves to be considered seriously but if you want a cheaper headphone then you should go to best headphones under 100 centers to explore more.
